Manchester United havemade an approach to Southampton about the transfer of midfielder Mario Lemina.
The Gabon international has a growing list of teams that have expressed interest in his services. Everton, Leicester City, and Manchester United are the major teams that have been mentioned so far.
Lemina is thought to be lined-up as a cheap replacement for star midfielder Paul Pogba if he leaves the club. The Frenchman has been linked with a move away from the club despite joining the Reds on their pre-season tour of Australia.
Lemina has been impressive since joining the Saints from Juventus in 2017. He is a box to box midfielder with the ability to win balls high up the pitch and initiate quick attacks. The 26-year-old also has a decent range of passes.
He would also have little problems in adjusting to the demands of a big club, having starred for Italian giants Juventus.
The response from United fans over this news has been largely negative, as fans have vented their disappointment on social media. Majority of the fans believe that he does not improve the squad.
Manchester United have enjoyed a positive summer so far making the signings of Daniel James from Swansea City in a transfer believed to be worth £17 million. The club also secured the transfer of fullback Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for £50 million.
Southampton are thought to be holding out for a transfer fee of £25 million. If Lemina makes the move it would take the club’s expenses to over £90 million.
Lemina has made 46 Premier League appearances for Southampton since arriving in 2017. It remains to be seen whether the player would make the move to the club.
